Isonye Foundation for Inclusive Healthcare gets its name from the Igbo (Southeastern Nigerian) word “isonye” meaning “to participate” or “to include”. It is a non-governmental, non-profit organization which started informally in 2017 and was formally registered by the Corporate Affairs Commission in February 2020 with the registration number 143716.
The foundation was born out of the need to make it easier for persons with disability (PWDs) to have inclusive access to services and materials that are necessary for their good health.
In the course of medical practice, the Executive Director, Dr. Ijeoma Jane Nnodim, a hearing-impaired medical doctor and paediatrician, has noticed the challenges PWDs face in getting healthcare that is customized for their needs. Many public health interventions, more often than not, leave this set of people behind making them an under-served population.
Isonye Foundation for Inclusive Healthcare seeks to help PWDs to participate in the quest for good health and well-being in line with the sustainable development goals and the mantra, “nothing about us without us”
We also intend to particularly promote the physical, mental, social and reproductive health of women and girls with disabilities, one of the most marginalized subset of PWDs.
Being a paediatrician with a great love for children, Dr. Ijeoma also seeks to reduce the dismal childhood morbidity and mortality rates in Nigeria using programs and activities by the foundation.
This she hopes to do in conjunction with the online health education forum, Dr. Ijeoma’s Healthy Kids’ Community, a Facebook group of over 11000 members (and counting), which she founded in March 2019.
